By mechanically linking the machine gun with the revolving propeller by use of an innovative push rod control system, the pilot merely had to point his airplane at the enemy and shoot through the revolving propeller, without fear of blasting the blades to bits or of being hit by deflected bullets. This was a real innovation early in World War I and it gave the Germans temporary control of the air. That the system was effective is evidenced by the fact that for a few glorious months in 1915, Eindeckers brought down so many allied aircraft that the period became known as the “Fokker Scourge”.
